Lancaster's Wayfinding System

The Wayfinding System for the City of Lancaster was developed and integrated by The Lancaster Campaign. The Wayfinding system is a multi-level signage system that incorporates a common look throughout the various signage types. Wayfinding entails coordinated and unified signage to make the city more usable, friendly, and findable. In Lancaster, the Wayfinding system includes the following components:

Pedestrian Wayfinding:

Pedestrian Wayfinding has a common thread to the vehicular signage but it is a distinct system catering to a different audience, the pedestrian visiting our city. The pedestrian signage will be functional in design. The design also incorporate the capacity to add and update the signage. The pedestrian system will consist of at least two types of signs: directional and kiosks depicting destinations within a 10-minute walking radius.

The signage was designed:

To improve access, identification, and connectivity of destinations in the city

To direct visitors to downtown destinations, encouraging them to explore the city, making their experiences more fulfilling and memorable

To increase the amount of pedestrian traffic, leading to a stronger sense of safety, greater opportunities for social contact and interaction, and capturing a greater share of tourist dollars.
