Keep Lancaster Beautiful (KLB), an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful, Inc. was unveiled in Lancaster City in September 2002. The Lancaster Campaign has been instrumental in providing opportunities for the organization's incubation. The mission of Keep Lancaster Beautiful is to have a positive sustainable impact upon the lives of Lancaster's residents improving the quality of the environment, beautifying our landscape, and fostering pride in our communities making them places of choice.
In July, 2006 KLB has become an entity of its own and is no longer housed in the Lancastr Campaign. For more information on KLB please contact Barb Baker, Program Manager by E-mail at:bbaker@lcswma.org
To achieve positive sustainable
impact in Lancaster City, KLB specifically divides our objectives
into four (4) main components: Education, Litter Prevention,
Beautification, and Research & Advocacy. Each of the components
is essential as we strive to improve Lancaster City neighborhoods.

Education
The educational aspects of KLB are widely viewed to be the most important component of our activities. The future of our community and our world lies in the guidance we provide to our children. Our objective is to develop and implement a curriculum-based program that expands the understanding of environmental issues. It is our intent to create a sense of awareness for children concerning issues related specifically to litter prevention, recycling, reuse, waste reduction, and the environment in general.
Litter Prevention
The Litter Prevention component of our mission primarily revolves around litter sweeps and graffiti abatement. We achieve these objectives in cooperation with neighborhood organizations, residents and stakeholders. KLB has a policy not to clean areas of the City without neighborhood participation, which would convey a message inconsistent with our philosophies on Litter Prevention. It is our belief that action is the impetus to change.
Beautification
Beautification is a natural compliment to our Litter Prevention component. Our beautification platform is built upon the foundation of "Pride Building" projects. This can consist of anything that a neighborhood might desire, assuming it would meet with criteria KLB establishes for neighborhood projects. KLB participation is designed to facilitate and enhance sense of community. The types of activities typically undertaken are: plantings, murals, banners, window boxes, street art, trash receptacles, etc. See Crystal Park Cleanup & Beautification.
Research & Advocacy
The fourth component, Research & Advocacy, is important
because in order to create effective solutions, we must
have up-to-date data regarding the issue at hand. There
is ample national information at our fingertips, but local
information is not as accessible. KLB promotes environmental
stewardship embracing three components of sustainability:
recycling, reuse, and waste reduction.
