Safe Passage is an organization dedicated to assuring the safety of the children of Lancaster City, with special focus on the hours before and after school. Funded by the School District of Lancaster’s “Safe and Healthy Schools” Grant, and working in cooperation with the Lancaster City Police, the SDOL, The Inner City Group, The Lancaster Campaign, as well as other organizations, Safe Passage’s mission is to identify and address the safety needs of a given school and it’s surrounding neighborhood. Safe Passage works to cooperate with, unite, supplement, and streamline existing safety efforts in and around the school and neighborhood. Current projects include the “Walking School Bus” program in which children are encouraged to walk to and from school with a designated and approved adult, rather than walking alone. Safe Passage also employs its resources to address traffic safety issues in the neighborhoods, lighting issues and neighborhood awareness. Safe Passage will continue to encourage a “neighborhood watch” style program which unites residents in the interest of keeping their streets safe for children to walk. Proper safety education for both parents and children is also a mission of Safe Passage.
